RELEASE NOTES:

How odd... I thought that I had registered this weeks ago... I was even pretty sure that I reviewed it.

In this _earlier_ ABC series featuring a plane crash on a mysterious island, about 40 or so surviviors band together and try to create a new society once they realize rescue would never come. In my head, the "hostiles" are those same survivors a decade or so later.

If you read the book, will you discover any LOST secrets? Perhaps... it's up to ABC and the production crew. But perhaps not...

For those willing to explore the issue, I've created a book ring... here are those willing to check this book out and enter their opinions...

NEW PEOPLE
10. Ollie1976
9. JerrilynnL
8. ArtisticAlias
7. innae
6. grubsneerg
5. mellion108
4. Carlissa
3. rebel-padawan
2. kayjay33 (Canada)
1. RockDg9 (Australia)

The list is inverted because I have another LOST book out there officially connected to the series and I didn't want both books to vanish at the same time.

This book is now on its way to Australia. By air.

Crash landed here in Australia today.

Thanks!

Journal Entry 4 by RockDg9 from Toowoomba, Queensland Australia on Friday, June 15, 2007
This is an interesting story - it's very quick to read. The first few pages are like an introduction to what has happened 'so far' in the TV series which all TV tie-ins have to an extent - it was carried out well. I've been doing some research and it looks like there were 2 comic books released as well.

The story of the book is pretty exciting - I would like to see an episode or two (I think only the pilot is available on DVD).

As to whether The New People could be the hostiles on Lost, well ... I'm not sure - there are a few theories online: JJ Abrams is a massive Rod Serling fan (who wrote the pilot for The New People) but apparently didn't know about 'The New People' ... or is he just saying that?

But I do think that it is a possibility
(SPOILER? -- Maybe read the book first)
So the premise is that the 'New People' island has been set up as a nuclear testing site that was never used, why then would there be supplies (like, food) unless there was going to be people staying there? (Dhama perhaps? although I think the hostiles were supposedly there before Dharma) This question may have been picked up by the Lost creators.

Here is the best website I could find on 'The Lost People' - it has clips of the show: TV Obscurities The New People

Thanks Greyflank, it's been an interesting journey and something to think about.

Onto kayjay33.

Sorry I had to split this up into two journal entries. I can't make long journal entires due to a router (perhaps?) problem. They are supposed to be read as one journal entry.

Not Lost. The book arrived today and being an avid Lost fan, I have already begun to read it.So far it seems to have even more grotesque creatures living there than Lost does. I had never heard of this TV series, and think it would be interesting if there were to be reruns. Thanks Greyflank for including me and thank you Rockdg9 for sending it along so promptly.

Journal Entry 7 by wingkayjay33wing from Langley, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, July 4, 2007
A very quick read. I think that the book would have been more interesting if it had started at the beginning,at the time of the plane crash. Instead it seems to go on the asumption that you know all about what has happened up to that point. I felt as though I was just reading one weeks episode. I would still like to have the opportunity to watch all seventeen episodes.
I will now find an address for the next participant and send the book on.

Received this in the mail today. Will PM next person now for an address and have on its way, as I am leaving for three months and don't want to strand this book here, as I will only be back in Red Lake once every nine days.
Thanks!

Hmmm...it appears I lied on my update! I mailed this one out early in the week. Hope it arrives in Florida safely!

I received this in the mail today - I''m looking forward to reading this one!

I read about 80 pages and couldn't finish it. I thought this book was poorly written and had some grammatical errors. I agree with kayjay33 that it would have been more interesting if it started at the beginning. I didn't see any connection to Lost at all.

8/27/07: mailed to mellion108 today!

Journal Entry 14 by mellion108 from Waterford, Michigan USA on Saturday, September 8, 2007
The book is here! Thanks so much for sharing. I'll read as soon as possible and have it moving again soon.

Wow, that was a hoot. Not a lot of story, eh? I agree with some of the comments above. I would have liked to have read a book that was based on the beginning of the series. Still, following along with Bull, Lee, Wash, and the rest was rather...interesting. I imagined the monkey crabs as mutant, pissed off tribbles.

Based on the site posted by RockDg9, this show lasted for about 17 episodes. It seems like they tried to cram every American stereotype into the show (angry young black man, soldier turned pacifist, spoiled rich boy, militant feminist, yada yada yada). I would like to see an episode or two just for giggles.

How much does our current "Lost" owe to this now ancient show? I imagine a vault in Los Angeles from which studio writers can just go in and pull out a framework for a show and start writing from that, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine that this idea has been floating around for some time. There may be similar elements in the new show, but that's most likely coincidental. I did think it interesting that one of the characters makes this observation:
Lying or seated back in the shadows were those who had chosen to follow Bull into the hills and stay with him. Potter, who was made to stand nearer the fire, could not make out their faces. He knew, in general, who they were, however. They were the others.
But, heck, these "others" have nothing on today's others!

Anyway, thanks for sharing this, greyflank. I have grubsneerg's address and will send this book out as soon as possible.

The book arrived in today's mail and I already like the looks of it. It's next on my TBR pile. Thanks for sharing :)

Journal Entry 17 by grubsneerg from Greensburg, Pennsylvania USA on Friday, September 28, 2007
Hunh! I read the book before reading everyone else's comments because I wanted to read this with an open mind. I was convinced that this was some elaborate LOST tie-in perpetrated by the good people at ABC; I was congratulating them on their cleverness in making the book look so retro with its green edges, and digging out old photos from the late 60s to make it look authentic, and even getting the publication date of 1969 in there. It was all so well done!

Seems I was fooled after all because this appears to be a genuine novelization of an actual ABC TV series that ran from 1969-70 and had some big names (though not necessarily at the time) attached like Rod Serling, Aaron Spelling, Richard Dreyfuss, A Martinez, Elaine Princi and more. That being said, the book was quite enjoyable for me and was a quick read. Some of its ideas were stereotypical of the time, some were timeless. And I couldn't help but notice all the times the phrase "the others" was used. ;)

I have innae's address and will be popping this in the mail tomorrow. Thanks for sharing, Greyflank!

The book has arrived safe and sound in Colorado (far away from any sea!!) -- There are some lovely postcards, and a bookmark too!

I am almost done with a short, but boring, book and will start this one soon!

Journal Entry 19 by winginnaewing from Aurora, Colorado USA on Thursday, October 4, 2007
This is a quick read, and I saved reading everyone else's comments until I was done. I would agree that it is poorly written and has LOTS of editorial errors (I think this happens often with TV show tie ins...got to get them out before the show is dead)

I checked for this show on IMDB and found this...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063935/

I don't think it has more than a minimal similarity to LOST, but still was entertaining. Perhaps we should petition the SCI-FI channel to resurrect the episodes.

Thanks to Greyflank for sharing this. I have ArtisticAlias' address (who is busily reading the Bad Twin -- yes, we are obviously the center of the rings) and I will send this out ASAP.

ED: 10/10/07: finally made it to the post office, and the book is on its way now!

Journal Entry 20 by ArtisticAlias from Ivyland, Pennsylvania USA on Friday, October 19, 2007
Received last week when I (of course!) was having connectivity issues. Unfortunately I don't have time to read this and so will pass it on to the next person per Greyflank. As of today both books in the LOST bookrings are in my possession. Will journal both before mailing. Sorry for the delay.
