The exams are over! Now Darrell and her friends can settle down to a year of fun. But with a pantomime to run and some terrible fights amongst the upper fourt, life's not as quiet as they'd hoped.

This is the fifth book in Enid Blyton's classic boarding-school series.

Another great Malory Towers book! Helped get me excited about going to boarding school when I was 12! (And the real thing even though it was close to 50 years after the book was written and in Australia came pretty close to what was in the series!

Arrived today and I'm already reading ;-)

And another part ;-) Hmm, what shall I say? It was always the book I disliked the most, but mostly because of the whole story. There's not really a "happening" in it, the whole thing develops and you know from the first page on what will happen. Really the worst book of the series, and in my eyes also one of the more cruel regarding how the girls react on each other. I really dislike that joking on Katherine, in my eyes it's sometimes really to be called a type of mobbing... That's an aspect I see now in the story but I never thought of it when I was a child. But nevertheless, thank you for that ring ;-)

Finished this after Christmas. Didn't like it that much either. Will finish the last book tomorrow and then send them off to drutt on Monday...

I quite enjoyed this one. It introduced the bossy Moira, pious Catherine and rabbit-teeth Maureen. Poor Gwendoline was most perturbed to discover that people thought she and Maureen were alike. The fifth-formers stage a pantomime, and Alicia's cousin June gets a wake-up call.

This book's now on its way to kitten99.

I really enjoyed re-reading these books - thanks to Taniazed for the bookring.

After much to-ing and fro-ing on the pms, this has been posted on it's way to Lobodyke today, as PRCS and lovelovebooks both asked to be missed out.

I'm looking forward to another trip down memory lane as I read this book. I'm in the middle of a mystery which I need to finish first then I'll start this.

Journal Entry 12 by Lobodyke from Bardstown, Kentucky USA on Wednesday, June 4, 2008
As with all of the previous books in this series, it was an enjoyable trip back to my childhood. Without being a plot-spoiler, I'll just say that I especially enjoyed some of the scenes, such as quarrels related to the pantomime and Gwendoline's ongoing travails. I'll send it on in the next couple of days.

I agree with Maresa. There were times when my young daughter and I thought the girls were quite cruel. They seemed to justify their cruelty by saying that it would help the girl to change into a more mature person. It needed to be done before they were grown-up and their bad habits were too ingrained to change. Perhaps that is an English outlook. I disagree with that attitude, perhaps it is an attitude that has been assigned to the past.

On the whole, my young daughter and I enjoyed the book. We both thought that we would very much have liked to seen the pantomime. We thought that Darrell was very talented in writing the pantomime, but it wouldn't have been a success without the great talents of most of the girls. Also, we felt as though Gwen actually was wanting to change even at the beginning of the book, but the new girl, Maureen was a hindrance and the rest of the girls are completely prejudiced against Gwen.
