I don't think I've ever been this disgusted with a writer. I started reading "The Sword of Truth" series a long, long time ago and I thought that the first few books were smart, well executed and that the author had a wonderful grasp of verbiage. What book is this in the series? Eight? Ten? It doesn't matter. Terry Goodkind is prolonging the inevitable. In this story the "hero" is poisoned. Everything is working against him ever finding an antidote and the chances he will live to love Kahlan another day is slim. The chance that Goodkind will die from this series poisoning him is looking like a possible conclusion for the whole story.

I am not one to shirk from violence on TV, in movies and certainly not in my literature. Life is dirty and I understand that. Evil exists and I understand that, too. The author's use of gruesome descriptions of cruelty to innocent children and adults is so obviously done for shock value that I was disgusted. Goodkind, if he was a consistently decent writer, would be able to get his point across without all of the gore. And the repetitive sentences? The enormous speeches that Richard makes? *snore* I'm skimming forward because he can't seem to cut to the point! Yep, everybody is stupid but Richard and Kahlan and he needs to brow-beat the point into them, and by reading, us. I get the point (again, and again, and again...).

People talk about the shocking things we see on TV and in video games as being so bad that we've become numb to it and need even more displays of graphic violence to wake us up. Well, I'm awake and I'll never buy another book from this series again. Hopefully Goodkind wakes up and smells the what? Viscera? Putrid smell of decay? Gods and Goddesses help him.
