A travel book with a difference -a woman journalist travels with her son to the wilds of Borneo and meets with headhunters/cannibals (although I understand they have stopped it now, says my colleague who has been there).

Arrived today. The suitably gruesome cover already tells me enough to knopw not to read this one before sleeping. I have a few more rings before this one but will have it read by the end of August.
Thanks jacinta2000

I read a lot of this book before sleeping, and some of it I wish I hadn't. This is the best description of jungle life and jungle that I have ever read. There is very little talk of the beauty of the jungle, but lots of description about the harsh reality of living in and surviving in it.

I thought Wyn Sargant was very honest in her descriptions and also very brave in the face of such adversity, I might have given up a lot sooner.

Sending on to Spiderchic

Received this today. Why is it you don't receive anything for ages and then 3 bookrings land on my mat within 2 days!! Not to worry though I'm a quick reader and shouldn't have it too long. It looks very gruesome look forward to reading it!
Thank you

I finished reading this book just before I went on holiday and didn't have time to journal - am back now though obviously!
I found it quite a gripping book once I'd got into it and think Wyn Sargent was a very brave woman not sure how I would have coped with those conditions.
Thank you for sharing shall send on to auglaise.

Received it a few days ago, but haven't been able to journal it as my boyfriend has been hogging the computer!

I found the descriptions of the lives of the Dyaks fascinating, but didn't really feel that Sargent strung together the most cohesive story. The book felt much more like a journal written by someone who is expecting to use it as an aid to their memory later on, perhaps to give a lecture on the subject, but not something that was expected to get the full situation of these people to someone who's life experience is completely and totally alien to the Dyak way. The book could almost have been a series of short stories, but I think that even then we're not given too much in the way of character development to motivate the story along. She just descibes things as she sees them, which is very interesting as a description of a culture but doesn't make easy reading as a novel.

I do, however, think that what she managed to accomplish for the Dyaks is admirable. I don't know if I would have been able to keep going with the amount of work that she had to do to improve the lives of these people, and am glad that there are people like that in this world. Thanks for sharing jacinta2000!

Caught this today. I do have some free time this weekend, so we'll see how close I get to reading this. :)

Morbidly engaging tale. The author almost makes a point of telling every single gross detail while glossing over anything positive. Several times I had to put the book down as the author got far to graphic.

Reserved for the next reader.

Just a short journal, summer is so busy time always and I´m just leaving for the summer cottage :)
I liked the book although it was not so easy to read (partly due to the small print). I learned again something new... I really didn´t know much about the headhunters of Borneo before. I know they exist but that´s all. And, of course, google has some work to do for me, again, as I want some more information about the Dyaks and other tribes. How is their life today, etc.

The book started its journey to the next reader last week. Thanks Jacinta2000 :)
