I just caught this book from a fellow bookcrosser, lilysmom. I can't wait to read it, since her recommendation means a lot to me!
Although this was a hard story to read in places, I found it to be engaging and very instructive on the culture and history of Afghanistan. It's always great to get a good story at the same time that one is learning something!
I caught the book from a business peer and friend who recommends many books to me. She gave it to me in NY after a business meeting and said "read it!" I have passed it on to the owner of our company. Overall, I found the book fascinating, extremely powerful, emotionally draining, a generally well-written. The central characters are well-developed and carry the often grim plotline well. The lead character is neither hero or villan, but a very real human being struggling with his own weaknesses while trying to deal with a world around him that most of us can only begin to imagine. The Afgan history that is so effectively woven around the character's life paints a vivid picture of Afganistan, a country that until 9/11 was nothing more than a distant mystery to most Americans--a sad but true comment on our ethnocentric approach to much of the world. It's an important book in today's environment.
