This book uses a cheap literary tool. Cheap literary tool. This book. Cheap.

The whole book is written with this style. Style. This book. Cheap. Style.

This style of writing only works well when there is a depth of meaning behind it. Depth of meaning. Style of writing. Cheap. Style. No depth.

Unlike Ken Haruf or Ernest Hemingway, Sandra Cisneros cannot pull it off. Pull it off. Pull it off. Sandra, PLEASE PULL IT OFF.

But anyway....

My brother recently read this book for a class, and he is going to release his copy in San Antonio, so I thought it would be fun to dig out my copy and release it here in the Houston area. Cisneros is a San Antonio native which is why we both have read a book neither of us would have read otherwise (he for a class, me for a bookgroup some years ago)...in terms of the known literary crowd, she is a big fish in a small pond. And there are not many noted Latina writers, so that makes it worth the read. But her usage of this hemingway-esque writing style just seems a little "i'm too sexy for my own writing" than it does impactful. If her storyline was deeper it might have played better.

Can't wait to hear what others think!
