I was just at my mom’s, and got a bunch of books from my childhood! Will have to figure out what to do with them. Side note: for a while, I ran a “library” with my books, and put masking tape with my initials on the spine (where library books are marked). Now many of my books have a missing piece of cover in that location!

It’s been too long since I’ve read this to rate it, but OH! I used to love this book :)

I LOVE this book! And I never would have re-read it, if not for this thread. I know this isn't the book the girls were looking for, but it has many similar characteristics. I decided to dig around for it, after reading this bookring book.

Almost-10 year old Sally has to go stay with her ancient Aunt Sarah when her parents are travelling and Mrs. Chipley's daughter gets sick. Arriving late in the evening, in the dark and in the rain, Aunt Sarah's house looks old and scary, and Aunt Sarah actually looks like a hunched-over witch. She even has a black cat named Shadow, who is very unfriendly.

Sally ends up staying in a pretty room with a picture of "another Sally", who is holding a beautiful doll. Sally realizes *she* looks like the "other Sally", and becomes fascinated by the painting. An off-hand remark made by her aunt about old things being stored in the attic piques her interest, and she makes her way up there the next morning when Aunt Sarah leaves the house to run errands.

Sally finds a trunk with the name "Sally" on it, and investigates. Finding the dress, bonnet and shoes from the painting, she puts them on and looks at herself in the mirror. She can't believe how much she looks like the other Sally, and then all of a sudden, she *is* the other Sally! She lives through an experience described in the other Sally's diary, finding out that the family cat has kittens.

The rest of the book describes Sally's adventures in trying to find the doll Elizabeth, mysteriously lost on Christmas Eve from the top of the Christmas tree; and her developing relationship with her Aunt Sarah.

I've always been charmed by this book, and was again tonight.

I'm going back to that other thread (or starting a new one) to see if anyone else might enjoy this. Since I've mentioned "A Traveller in Time", I should say that this is much simpler, and takes place in a more current America. But anyone who enjoys well-written, pleasant children's books will enjoy this.
