In the 1990s, Phil Rickman turned out five hefty novels most memorable for a superbly-evoked Anglo-Welsh setting. These five (CURFEW [UK-published as CRYBBE], CANDLENIGHT, THE MAN IN THE MOSS, DECEMBER, and CHALICE) all turn around Celtic spirits on wild terrains, smoky and gossipy pubs, and worldly-wise, recently-arrived outsiders confronting suspicious long-rooted townfolk. All are worthwhile for readers broadly into Celtic lore and speculative fiction.
Rickman now seems to be full-time into the “Merrily Watkins” novels, Merrily being a single-Mom, urban-bred Anglican vicar whose first parish is the Anglo-Welsh town of Ledwardine. Six of them are apparently out now. I have the first three (THE WINE OF ANGELS, MIDWINTER OF THE SPIRITS, THE CROWN OF LIGHTS) eagerly TBR.
