"Margaret Atwood’s new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it.
The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes - into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief." I have not read this book, but was just talking to a family member yesterday about several books/Authors that I wanted to read and this was one! I have read several of Atwoods books and am looking forward to this one. Imagine my joy when I found this book on the "Friends of the Library" bookshelf today. I was even more thrilled when I read the "curious" label on the binding and then the one on the inside cover. I think this is a fabulous idea as I am always searching Goodwill stores, yardsales, etc. for previously loved books. I get a thrill from a good find at a great price! It's a sickness, I know. I was a little greedy in my excitement and took two other titles as well which I plan to read and/or pass on to family members and then release back into the world. Thank you bookcrossing.com and the other two generous readers (Bookrabbit and PetFriday)for introducing me to this unique and fun bookclub. I also plan on realeasing other books I have read.
I had loaned this to my niece and just got it back. She said it was "strange" but she liked it. I may read this one next.
This was not my favorite Atwood book. The story had too many holes in it for me to empathize with the main character.
