When We Were Orphans

England, 1930s. Christopher Banks has become the country's most celebrated detective, his cases the talk of London society. Yet one unsolved crime has always haunted him; the mysterious disappearance of his parents, in Old Shanghai, when he was a small boy. Moving between London and Shanghai of the inter-war years, When We Were Orphans is a story of memory, intrigue and the need to reutn.
The style of this was very similar to The Remains of the Day (by the same author) - very English in the style of language and rather old-fashioned. The story was moving, especially towards the end as Christopher finds out what has happened to his friends and family. I think it would have helped me to understand the story if I'd known more about the history of Japan and China in the 1930s and 1950s as some of it did seem to be presumed and I didn't always know why things were happening. Some of the time jumps were a bit confusing too.
I will be taking this on holiday with me and intend to release it while I'm away. Since I don't know where I'll be releasing it, I shall make release notes when I get back, but I'm making this journal entry in case it gets caught before I can make release notes.
