I'm not,... but this looked amusing,... first page I opened up to was planet of the apes... Not to mention it had "Real Genuis" which I have "accidentally" seen a dozen times ;) I picked up this book for browsing but I ended up reading it!! Starting a BOOKRAY to share the humor. *Link to Forum post* http://bookcrossing.com/forum/20/768443
While I'm not a "Baked Potato" nor have I ever particularly cared for being Baked... this was a funny look at some familiar movies. Men (more so than most women)seem to be able to appreciate this genre of movie UN-baked for the subtle humor or cheesiness, horror, manliness, whatever the particular edge. I by proximity have experienced many since my husband has held the remote for 15 years now! (Hence my passion for BOOKS! *wink*) This was an amusing well-written assessment of many movies that have snuck into our sub-conscious minds by repeat snippets of exposure. Case in point "Better of Dead" we've probably seen so many snippets and parts of that movie that we've seen it all.. just not in the same sitting. remember...I want my TWO DOLLARS!" the paperboy yells... The French foreigh exchange student pretends not to speak english to the amorous obnoxious boy who is in the host family. eventually it comes to a downhill ski contest... I thought so. Oh well... It was a light read after a LONG intense book. Just right for an in-between book "snack" and how appropriate since this books audience is purported to be in a constant state of having the munchies!
I received this a few days ago from a fellow book-crosser. Thank you!
Sending to then next book-crosser!
Amusing as this arrived during the week MisterNYC and I are off to see (the remnants of) The Dead, a baked potato-filled experience if there ever is one. :) I am looking forward to reading this and may take it to the shows to entertain MisterNYC and myself during set break. Should be able to turn it around quickly - I don't think it's 'cerebral' reading.
Flipped through this last night, to/from Sleeze-side Heights to see the "B-Street Band" (a Springsteen tribute band) give a free concert on the Boardwalk. I'm beginning to think one shouldn't be 'straight' when reading this... Two comments on a couple of movies I enjoy stood out for me.

"Not really tearjerker sad, but kind of bittersweet sad, like a good "Peggy-O".
I *had* to read that comment 9 years to the day that Jerry (Baked Potato himself) Garcia passed away. But, I so understand what they are saying -- and ruffled through the tapes in the car to find a fine "Peggy-O" for the ride home.
BTW, B&J's Phish Food ice cream is the best... Actually the Phish Sticks are even better, but so hard to find these days!!

Now, I don't really remember this exact episode of What's Happening!! (but I do remember, "What's Up Dwayne?" and "Hey, hey, hey hey!" from all the episodes), but it made me laugh. Bootleg opera v. bootleg Doobies... it's a tough decision.
Thanks for sharing this busybooklover. I feel like I should set my Baked Potato husband lose on this after he gets home from seeing "The Dead" tonight, but I'll move it along or it might fall into the couch never to be seen again here.

This is on it's way to MollyGrue tomorrow!!
I'm looking forward to reading this. I flipped through and read some of the descriptions already. Funny!
I found this to be fairly entertaining...and a bit frightening as I have seen (and own) *many* of the movies mentioned. Most of those I haven't seen yet are on my queue over at Greencine. Not that I'm a pot-smoker myself. :)
I have to rate this book a bit less than I would normally as it denounced Rocky Horror as a "bad seed", as well as a couple other movies that I really like as "questionable".

Yesterday we received mail for the first time since Hurricane Frances hit, and this was in it! Woo hoo! I read a few reviews last night by the dim light of a flashlight. Just didn't seem as funny as I had anticipated. Then again, now that I have electricity and water, perhaps I will be more easily amused!
While I am not a "Baked Potato" either, I have known a few in my lifetime, and have, on occasion, watched movies with them. This is an entertaining book- I did laugh out loud a couple times (I definitely remember laughing at their reviews of "Nosferatu the Vampyre" and "Yentl"). I've seen quite a few of the movies they included, and was delighted to see that "The Adventures of Buckaroo Bansai Across the Eighth Dimension" was the first review in the book. This was the very first video hubby and I rented when we bought our first VCR oh- so-many years ago. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that the authors had included Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" (yes, the six-tape Bill Moyers interview that aired on PBS). Their synopsis: "Baked guy in regular chair figures out universe." They certainly did include a variety of videos. Some of the reviews really meandered off topic. I enjoyed the ones that actually addressed the films in more detail the best. It was a fun read, and I thank busybooklover for sharing. Tomorrow it will be off to silverstarry.
I am not a Baked Potato either - the only thing I bake are cookies, and no that isn't code for anything! Nevertheless, this was a funny take on classic movies. Sometimes the one word sentence underneath the movie title was enough to crack me up. Under the Princess Bride entry, the bolded sentence reads, "Dong, Grandpa is talking to you." Hee!
Mailed to dagon on 9/24/04.
Received today.....look forward to this.....looks great fun!
Should I worry? Apart from the particulary American videos,I find that I own, have seen, count as my favorite films a good 90% of the eye fodder reviewed here!
I *loved* this! I found the humour comfortingly juvenile and found myself giggling stupidly at quite a few things....quite soberly giggling I must add!
As for the bibliography............Worth getting the book just to read this!I'm sure I've come across a couple of them!
Great fun,a real hoot......but obviously not to everyones taste!
(Must agree about the bad seed comments about Rocky Horror.Boo Hiss)
Will be posting this on to YokoSpungeon

I wish I had read this book when I was a student, and could have systematically made my way through the recommendations! A lot of fun, and quite coherently and diligently assembled given the circumstances the authors' must have found themselves in.
Busybooklover - do you want this back, or shall I forward it on to someone? I have someone I *can* pass it to, but they are not yet a bookcrosser, so it is a risk-laden enterprise. I await your instruction!
