This was such a good book. I totally identified with Cannie. Well, sort of. I've never been publicly humiliated in a national magazine. Or gotten pregnant by my ex-boyfriend. Nor do I have a famous moviestar for a friend. Ok, I identified with her on the body image idea. She is a great character. I loved this book. Thank you tarasdsu for sending it to me!

I'm setting it up as a bookring. PM me if interested.

Edit -
I'm moving the list of participants here to make my profile page just a bit shorter! :-)

I really enjoyed this book! I completely identified with Cannie and her wickedly sarcastic sense of humor.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I'm looking forward to reading more!

i love this so far,, my favorite quote i can't stop laughing over:
(while at a spa) I felt like a very pampered, very exotic pet ... that, or a particularly expensive cut of meat.

some things that i really didn't expect happened in the book. at first i was really annoyed by the drift from what i imagined the book should be, but i was satisfied by the ending. this has been the book i've enjoyed most of recent.

Journal Entry 14 by Nik-The-Stik from London, Ontario Canada on Thursday, October 21, 2004
Ohmigosh!! I just loved this story! Cannie is such a wonderful character. She really made me think about things, and relate to her views. For example, the part that really got to me was when she spoke of advice given to her by a one-time therapist: "You can't change the things other people in your life do, but you can change the way you react to them". That concept is something I myself have struggled with for a while now. I have always thought it in theory... but to know it and manage to apply it, are two entirely different things. Reading it like that though - through Cannie's story - really inspired me to remember it & keep working at it.

I just found this to be a really inspiring work of fiction. I think mostly because it was so down to earth in a lot of ways; and so wracked with emotion, and dealing with emotions.

Thanks, rubyjules, for sharing this! I'm so glad I read it... of course now I'm dying to read Jennifer Weiners' 2nd novel, In Her Shoes! :)

This will be traveling to mamawolfie tomorrow (or as soon as I get the address/just PM'ed her tonite)

Thanks!

OK, I'll admit, I thought this would be a ho-hum, twenty-something single-chic book. It was recommended to me by a friend who likes romance novels (not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just that got me expecting something different). I thought, what the heck, a little light reading now and then never did anyone any harm...

I really enjoyed this book and ended up finishing it in 2 days! Seriously, I enjoyed it! A whole lot more than I expected to, and even caught myself getting a little choked up over Joy.

Thanks for sharing such a refreshing read. I've PM'd seetpea0678 and will ship this ASAP.

**Update- Started on this 2/15

Journal Entry 23 by Bunnybee from Amarillo, Texas USA on Sunday, February 20, 2005
Nice book, very real story- full of life's unfortunate events, and disappointments. And it's all in how you look at it, and things might not turn out like the dreams and wishes you have, but they DO work out and people CAN still be happy in the end with new dreams. There are things about Cannie that I couldn't relate to, because I've always felt like I didn't fit in. I'm not skinny, but I'm not overweight, either. And as I can't relate to the thin people... I couldn't really relate to some of the thoughts she had, either. But it is sad that society does tend to put people into categories, isn't it?? And we grow up feeling like we have to fit into some kind of category for acceptance. I've always felt fat, but yet not accepted into "fat circles"- because they'd look at me and tell me I wasn't fat. So, like I said... this story is very real. Funny how you can still be hurt even if you are rejected by people you know with qualities you don't want to be 'known for'. Even all the "weirdness" of the family members- the broken marriage, the withdrawn brother, 'wild child' sister... and even Cannie's mom- although THAT might not happen to all of us (trying not to give away spoilers), it's still common for some of us to see our own moms do things we'd never thought she could do. What is a perfect mom or family anyway?? At least she did the best she could in being there to support Cannie. Again... very real. Even her father... that kind of thing happens too often to kids who don't deserve that kind of rejection.

I didn't enjoy the book too much for the story's sake- but I do like the message and how things turned out in the end. Parts of it went real slow- but from the middle of the book onward, it really did get good.

I will be PMing the next person for the address- I thought I did it already but I haven't! So hopefully I will be able to send it on our next postal day (Tuesday).

Journal Entry 25 by RoryG from Bluemont, Virginia USA on Friday, May 20, 2005
I got back from a trip and found this one waiting for me. Should be a quick read :)

Journal Entry 26 by RoryG from Bluemont, Virginia USA on Friday, May 27, 2005
I liked the book, even though I was really doubtful in the beginning. Somehow I didn't like the first chapters too much. But it just kept getting better and better. And I totally loved that Cannie didn't need to be thin to be happy. I had borrowed In Her Shoes (next book byt he same author) from my sister and I had already read it, but I had to go back and see what happened to Cannie, since the author tells that she appears in that book as well. Anyway, I liked also that even though this was a romance novel, it had some more meat to it than just the relationship between the main character and the man she's bound to be with.

I'll send this on as soon as I get the next person's address.

Journal Entry 27 by AppleAngel on Thursday, June 16, 2005

Journal Entry 30 by MommyMace from Hopkinton, Massachusetts USA on Sunday, November 27, 2005
I decided against finishing the book after a few chapters. The night before, I regrettably finished a very "heavy" book about drug addiction (A Million Little Pieces), and after reading that, well, this book just didn't hit me... I felt, it was a bit like another book I read, Sammy's Hill, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I don't know, this book didn't seem very original.

So anyway, I was curious, and I skimmed a few chapters.

Then I got hooked on the end and finished the last half of the book in one night!

I still thought it was improbable, getting pushed by (well, I won't give it away)...and what happens after...come on... Her Mom, and her Mom's friend, come on...!

But, it was entertaining, and I never would have guessed the last half of the book.

I'll give it a 5!

Thanks for including me in the ring. On to the next person!

Journal Entry 31 by Neena11 from Melfort, Saskatchewan Canada on Friday, December 9, 2005
Arrived safe and sound today. I was relieved to see that I am the last on the list, as I have 3 other rings to get through. I was just going to do a quick scan before journaling, and have already finished the first chapter... guess I know what I'll be doing this afternoon. lol Thanks for sharing rubyjules. :)
