c. 1943 -- 218 pages -- Paperback -- #62 on The 100 Favorite Novels of Librarians list -- same author as "Joy in the Morning" -- Specially abridged by Bronson Dudley -- General Editor, Virginia French Allen

Front Cover: The classic American novel of a young girl's coming of age.

Back Cover: "Some people called it the Tree of Heaven ... No matter where its seed fell, it made a tree which struggled to reach the sky. It grew in boarded-up lots and out of neglected rubbish heaps. It was the only tree that grew out of cement. It thrived in Brooklyn, but only in tenement districts.

"That was the kind of tree in the mossy yard belonging to Francie Nolan's house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn."

As the tree grew, so did Francie. And like the tree, her spirit struggled to be free of the poverty and despair which so often surrounded her.
