I found this book compulsive reading, it is no exaggeration to say I couldn't put it down.
Set in America after a regime change, society has changed beyond recognition as war amd a now encapsulated society dictated by extreme religious belief sees people designated roles for their life.
Given low birth rates and high infertility, groups of fertile, viable women are given the role of handmaids. Protected, removed and controlled, these women are literally vessels sent to serve the high ranking officials in a bid to reproduce healthy children. In a world where women are no longer permitted to read, write or freely communicate, we follow one handmaid's story as she recounts her life as a handmaid and her memories of life before the regime.
The writing flows and even with flashbacks, it is an extremely easy yet thoroughly moving read.
It will lead you to question morals, society and freedom.

One of my favourite Margaret Atwood novels. It's something I re-read regularly, so I've taken this to spread the word to non-Atwood types!
