A present from my mum a number of years ago, this beautiful little book tells the stories of the various cats James Herriot (the famous Yorkshire vet) knew both personally and in his professional capacity.

This arrived safe and sound at the end of a long voyage.
The post office is an absolute zoo this time of year so I am not even going to try to send this out until the week after Christmas.
I really enjoyed this book. The only thing that would have made it better was if it were longer.
One thing that really surprised me was that cats were completely ignored in Herriot's veterinary training. It amazing how much things have changed. I go to a vet that specializes in cats.
The stories are wonderful and really illustrate what wonderful companions cats can be (one of mine is napping on my lap right now), but I think the thing I liked most about the book were the illustrations. I loved them! Lesley Holmes's landscapes and cat portraits are wonderful. They make a great book fantastic.
I'll be posting this to Olifant on the 27th. [update: sent 12/24/05]

Book has arrived safely in Utrecht today, together with another ringbook, Ghostwritten (David Mitchell). Thanks for the BC card, morsecode, didn't know they existed. I'm looking forward to James Herriot's Cat Stories. I've read his Dog Stories and loved them.
Alfred, Oscar, Boris, Olly and Ginny, Emily, Moses, Frisk, Buster. James Herriot wonderfully portrays his patients. He writes with so much humour and enthousiasm that I somtimes smile and cry within one story. I also enjoyed Lesley Holmes illustrations. Especially Olly and Ginny on a dry stone wall in the fields and the one of Ginny roaming the greenhilled countryside.
Thanks for sharing this nice little book, laura0141. Now waiting for Winterson's address.

Off to coolboxuk it goes. Happy reading!
Arrived today - next one to read after finishing the massively big volume I'm on.
A lovely charming bedtime read!!! I've read James Herriot before and always enjoyed his books, but found that this was even of course much sweeter than his dealings with horses, sheep and cows... It's a collection of short stories about his own cats as well as vet experiences involving cats - each of them cute and different, some funny and some that make you cry... I just read it in one sitting and would recommend to anybody who has a heart for cats!
No takers at the Chertsey Bookcrossers' Meeting tonight - so will mail it back to Laura0141 tomorrow.
Received with thanks.
