The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (Plume Contemporary Fiction)
6 journalers for this copy...
I was soooo excited. Another bookcrosser was coming to town and I had TWO books on her wish list. But then I found out that they were old wishes and she's already read them (in fact had 2 copies of one on her shelf.) So I went to the UBS to cheer me up after trying to do a good deed and failing. Came back with an armful of books, of which this was one, and guess what? It's on her list but not yet on her shelf! With my luck, she'll have gotten it since I last checked.

Alas, her travel plans seem to have changed, so I am making this book available again.
Reserved for JeepACV as a RABCK. Her father is off in Africa running his 66th marathon next month, and she thought this would be an interesting plane-ride-read. I have never run a marathon- how cool that he's done so many! Maybe he'llcome do our Cooper River Bridge Run sometime. The picture is of the old bridges. A new one is being built as we speak.

Thanks for sharing this book! I didn't realize they were short stories. I'll probably read these at work during lunch before I pass it on to my dad, the runner. Short stories are great for work since I only get to read for a short amount of time, and I've read most of the ones I have already.
Thanks again!
Oh, and not only is it his 66th marathon (could be 67th or 65th, I can't keep track anymore), it's his 7th continent (yes, believe it or not, there's a marathon in Antartica). http://www.marathontour.com/antarctica/index.shtml
I can't even find the time to run 10 miles a week!

OK, well the 4 month trip to Africa is done and all have been home safe and sound and getting ready for the holidays.
Here's a link to the African marathon:

I didn't get a chance to read this before I loaned it out to the "hard-core" runner, so it's going on Mt. TBR now before it travels again.
Thanks again for passing this on!

I finally got around to reading more of the stories in this book (took me long enough - huh?).
I'm house-sitting at my dad's and it was a light book to pack. He's off to China to run a marathon on The Great Wall on May 22nd (which also happens to be his 61st birthday). http://www.great-wall-marathon.com/ I remember sending this with him to Africa a couple years back - now he's on marathon #74! I'm gearing up for half-marathon #2, but that just doesn't seem as impressive - LOL!
Anyway, enough about running! Get on with the reading!!!!
The author has a blunt style to his writing. At times it is refreshing, at time a little grating. Overall, the stories were interesting.
Time for this book to do a little running of its own - off to the relays to see if it can travel!!
Thanks for passing this on to me and letting me enjoy it for so long.

RELEASE NOTES:
Bookrelay shipped by boat to Australia today
I am very happy to receive this. You should see the envelope, the book took several detours to parts unknown before finally arriving in Australia, where it took a side tour and arrived safely 3 months later here with me. This is a well travelling book. It survived its journey, and I am looking forward to reading it. Thanks very much for sharing it.
This collection of short stories was certainly a mixed bag. I never read "the Match" as I just couldn't read about soccer. I did try. The first story, which is also the title, was the longest and not the best. I did throughly enjoy it, but my favourite, was a little short one. (There were two favs) the first the lonly old man who befriends two little girls only to have them taken away from him, and the other favourite one, is the little child who saw a man try to kill himslef, and this makes him realise that no matter how 'black' he feels, it is not worth taking your life. A black subject, but it has a positive message. Thanks for sharing.

Wow has this book been places! running-gal gave it to me because she's taken off on an around Australia trip and needed to dismantle her TBR pile. This is a collection of really good short stories. I agree that the first is probably the least engaging (and the longest), but the rest are interesting little vignettes into the lives of the characters. Worth the time.
