The Space Merchants is an interesting look at a future in which commercialism has become the underlying theme of society. Mitch Courtenay, a high level executive, has been charged with the task of selling the colonization of Venus to the planet earth. Mitch finds himself in a life or death struggle with "consies" (slang for conservationists; note the resemblance to "commies"; this book was written in 1952), rival corporations, and sleazy low-life consumers, who all want to bend the colonization of Venus to their own ends.

This was a pretty good book. It showed what an all out move to extreme capitalism could do to our society. Worth reading.

I didn't much know what to expect from this book. I sure expected more hardcore science-fiction than what I got, but it's actually a good thing I got something else, to feed my fascination with dystopian societies. The story is a very interesting look at a future where the great god of Sales rules over the life of all individuals, to the point the world is divided between the executives... and the consumers, second-class citizens whose only purpose, according to those higher up in the social hierarchy, is to buy and keep on feeding commerce.

Moreover, it seems commercial assassinations are game in this world, as long as you warn beforehand... a vision of the future that can be quite frighteningly convincing. As a reviewer of this book said, this is a terribly timely dystopian satire, dealing with capitalism and consumist culture taken into extremes. An incredible book that will make you think, long after you've read it. A complete page-turner. I recommend it.

For a much better review than mine, I can only point you here.

As promised, this book is now traveling to ryanreader as of today. I know it's not your usual genre but since this cannot be categorized as hardcore science-fiction, you'll probably end up liking it and will have the opportunity to read outside your usual kind of books. Enjoy!

got this in the mail today.........thanks!

I'll be happy to venture outside my usual genres and give it a shot (and I'll keep in mind it's not average sci-fi).

My TBR is huge.........so it'll probably be awhile, but I will read it!

Thanks again!!
