The memoir of teenager Mae Taing and his Chinese-Cambodian family when the Khmer Rouge turn against their own people and take over Cambodia. This civil war was a heartbreaking event that occurred in my lifetime. It’s difficult to believe the amount of cruelty endured by the people of Cambodia as they struggled to survive the horrors of famine, rape, imprisonment, and genocide occurring in the 1970s. Yet these brave people never gave up and continued to fight to overcome the atrocities in the hope of a better life.
