To be honest, I was a bit worried about this book, because I've read the Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and I found it a somewhat difficult read. The story was interesting and it touched on many important issues, but I found the writing style kind of dry and dated.

This slim tome contains "The Black Ball" of the title and three other stories, namely "Boy on a Train", "Hymie's Bull" and "In a Strange Country" and I was relieved to see that it was much more accessible. Of course the author touches on racial discriminations and injustices and violence produced by it and much more, but the length of each story and the decent writing made it a good read, poignant and emotionally demanding and providing food for thought maybe, but easy to read on a literary point of view.

Some poignant and moving and beautiful stories in their own way...
