This is the story about two women who are trapped by a past that won't let go. As Maj-Britt festers malevolently in her hermetic apartment, appeased only by an endless supply of food, Monika works ceaselessly to blot out her pain, punishing herself unforgivingly if she fails to meet her own high standards. They have nothing in common but the determination to obliterate their memories and be left alone - but when a letter and a tragic accident force the past back to life, the emotional void at the centre of their lives gapes wide and threatens to engulf them both. Forced into a confrontation, each woman proves the catalyst for the other's destruction - or salvation. A taut psychological thriller, "Shame" builds inexorably and subtly into a study of the devastating powers of fear, oppressive religion and forbidden sexuality.

Highlighted during a recent book cull it's time this travelled. Hmm, strange had this for years, thought I had read it but a brisk whisk through a few pages just now offers no familiar scenes or characters. Also, its not been registered with BookCrossing as a travelling book till now...

Curious, I must have got this muddled with another of Altvtegan's one word book titles. Briefly I can tell this has a number of Alvtegan's trade mark characteristics, slow burn pace, nerve shredding suspense, some characters that are complex and notably flawed in many cases, therefore more than a challenge to connect with. You have to be in the zone.

Alfven's writing style demands measured reading, and I'm unable to dedicate that to it at present for a thorough read through - ref again my book cull - which happily coincides with a great release opportunity. (Of which see more in the next Journal Entry.) The work of hers I've greatly enjoyed has been very rewarding in terms of character studies and insights into what could be behind the sometimes frankly bizarre behaviour of some of her actors. So yes, some of her characters are struggling with life and that can make for rather depressing reading, but do persevere you may, like me, find an uplift where you least expect it and some remarkable reading.
