Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel - Good

Alison is a medium, not one of the charlatans, she actually communes with the spirits, hears their voices and has an ever present spirit guide that drives her crazy with his unpleasant antics and the memories he brings of her early life.

She meets Colette at one of her 'shows' and immediately knows that she is the person she needs to be her Admin Assistant/Manager/General Dogsbody/Friend. Soon she has moved in with Alison and basically runs her life. Initially this is perfect. Alison's life becomes so much smoother and easier. But then Colette decides they should write a book about Alison's life and experiences and they are soon digging up trauma from the past.

As the story continues, Colette becomes more and more controlling and things start to spiral as Alison deals with the traumas of her childhood.

I found some of this deeply disturbing but it was interesting and well written, despite the fact that I didn't like any of the characters.
