"Taking a personal and professional challenge to the desert". This book was a handout at an advertising industry event. The author, after a difficult period in his life, decides to enter the 250-km Gobi March (Gobi desert of China) and shares how he triumphed over the many challenges faced in the gruelling, long-distance race.

Found in Flat Rate Canadian Book Box, looks like an interesting read.

UPDATE: My thoughts, Steven Danis decided to run the Gobi desert marathon, story why he took this on, his training and recovery and thoughts. A feel good book, would have liked to have learned more about the history of the race and local people.

I picked this up because I wanted to read about the Gobi race and the terrain and the physicality needed to complete the race.

Danis embarks on the race becasue of upheaval in profesional life in 2008-2009. He wants to do something that is a major undertaking that will test his physical endurance and hopefully, strengthen his character.

He trains for several months. He's very methodical, organized and driven already. I don't think he could have succeeded training and completing the race if he didn't already have these qualities in his personality.

Along the way he does blog about his experience - the training, the endurance, the mistakes, the things he learns and he raised over $50K for a cause close to his heart. He finds himself transformed after the race and finds lessons he can apply in both his personal and professional life.

It's a very positive memoir of the his days as a Gobi Runner and he shares his learnings with us. I am not downplaying his experience, or his lessons; but it was his life of relative privilege, being a former athlete and his personal drive and ambition that made him sucessful. He had these qualities before he embarked on his journey of transformation. I think the lesson is that sometimes you need to do something BIG to remind yourself of your the strengths you already have.
