Mario Puzo was born in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York in 1920. He was an author and screenwriter and is probably best known for The Godfather, which was published in 1969. Puzo won the Oscar for the screenplay of both “The Godfather” and its sequel.

The novel follows the Corleone family, one of the five great Mafia families of New York. As the book opens in 1945, the family’s head is Don Vito – the Godfather of the book’s title. He has four children – Sonny, Fredo, Michael and Constanzia. Officially, the Corleones are involved in the olive oil trade – though they make their real money through protection rackets, gambling and the unions. Their real power comes from their influential contacts – they have a large number of politicians, the judiciary and even policemen on their payroll. Sonny and Fredo are quite happy to work in the family business – Michael, less so. (He wants to make a break from the family trade; he even fought in the War, against his father’s wishes. Nevertheless, he is e is seen by the Don as his most able successor). Tom Hagen, a qualified lawyer and the Don’s consigliere, is another unofficial member of the family. Tom was orphaned as a boy, and brought home at twelve years old by Sonny. Don Vito raised him as his own but, out of respect to Tom’s parents and their name, never formally adopted him.

Barring a section that covers Vito’s rise to power, “The Godfather” covers the ten year period after the Second World War. It features a bloody war between the Corleones and New York’s other four families, and Don Vito’s final years as the family’s head.

A very enjoyable book, but maybe not one for those who are squeamish.
