From the cover: "...a big novel about a small place...an affectionate depiction of a village's struggle to find its identity in a rapidly changing world...a novel bursting with humanity...a little universe filled with wise, foolish, fragile and endearing characters".

Found in Flat Rate Canadian Book Box. I knew someone who came from Trinidad, should be an interesting read.

UPDATE: The main character Narpat was both wise and foolish but always wanting the best for his family, and his community. Caught in poverty in a changing world, he does his best. Beautifully written, always with some hope.

I enjoyed this. The characters were vibrant and interesting and Narpat was definitely both foolish and wise. I felt for Jeeves and his sisters, but I enjoyed watching Jeeves grow from the baby into the man he became and all the steps along the way that taught him so much about life and how he wanted to live his.
