I'm interested in the subject matter of this (the life of a few women of different origins in Kabul) but the pinkness of the cover is a bit twee, it looks like chicklit. Will carry on reading, though I am extremely annoyed by all the 'cuz, would've, could've, must've - is it so difficult to write out the word have?
It annoys me that a 60-year old woman is described as old, with creaking bones. From the description of her yellowing eyes and lizardlike wrinkled skin, you would think she was 90.

The author has lived and worked in Afghanistan and even had an Afghan husband, so she obviously knows what she is talking about. She was a hairdresser but trained in disaster relief and went there with a team of doctors and dentists and set up a beauty salon and a café (described in her first book). Yet I always had the feeling that this story set in a café run by an American woman (so drawing on her own experiences) was a little too romanced, even though we do see what Afghan women have to endure, the dangers, the traitors and terrorism. At the end of the book is an interview with Deborah Rodriguez which seemed more authentic and revealing as to the real situation in the country, with less of the love stories. Subjects for discussion and a few recipes close the book.
