When George and Sabine Harwood arrive in Trinidad from England, George is immediately seduced by the beguiling island, while Sabine feels isolated, heat-fatigued, and ill-at-ease. As they adapt to new circumstances, their marriage endures for better or worse, despite growing political unrest and racial tensions that affect their daily lives. But when George finds a cache of letters that Sabine has hidden from him, the discovery sets off a devastating series of consequences as other secrets begin to emerge.
A compelling and moving novel, which drew me in right from the first page and I so wanted to know everything about Sabine's life.
I certainly learned a lot about Trinidad's history since the mid 1950's and looked up a bit more about Eric Williams on the internet. A great history lesson and yet, also a very human story.

Taken from the Mixed Fiction bookbox. Thank you. I like Monique Roffey, but haven't read this one before.
This was really good. I had no idea how the story was going to turn out for the different characters. but I guessed it couldn't end happily for everyone. I really warmed to Sabine and like kinedi I learned a lot about Trinidad.
Passed on to Teapot at the Old Gang meet up. Happy reading!
Thank you very much Bookfrogster for bringing this along for me!
