'Thrilled to get this bio for Xmas from Santa aka Donfiction. I am still sad about losing Charlie last year, and now, we have just lost his wonderful wife/love of his life, the amazing Shirley. What better way to remember and celebrate Charlie than to have a book full of anecdotes/funny stories/praise for the dapper Mr. Watts, heartbeat of the Rolling Stones.

A lovely read. Touching and funny in parts. Well researched. A front row seat for the life-movie of Charlie, whose existence
was quite quiet, except when he was on stage with "the boys" (and girls - ie: Lisa Fischer & other singers and guests). Charlie never did show-off drum solos and hardly ever talked about himself or gave interviews. It's through others, we learn about his wry sense of humour, his OCD-ish habits, his "escapes" playing jazz concerts with life-long mate Dave Green (they met when Dave was 4, Charlie 5), hanging out at Ronnie Scott's, how he would go to auctions and buy things for friends who couldn't afford them. The happiness on their faces was worth the (often very high) prices. He was devoted to Shirley, Seraphina and Charlotte (wife, daughter, granddaughter) and I wasn't surprised when Shirley passed away - just a year after Charlie. They were married for over 55 years, and every time Charlie went on tour, he just wanted to get home to Shirley. The comments at the front end from Mick and Keith are heartfelt. They are going to miss Charlie forever.

Oops, forgot to give it a rating. 9/10 for sure.

Enigmatic, endearing Charlie. Donfiction gave this a look-see, but he's just not as intrigued by Charlie as he is by Mick or Keith. Anyway....back to the Rock & Roll bookshelf.
