Book 11 of the DCI Ryan series, but this is the prequel. Ryan is new to his team and they are still getting to know him - and now they are hunting the killer of one of their own. This is a bit more gory than some of the others, with the true evil of the Hacker shown. Quite how L.J. Ross manages to get the sheer level of suspense when, having read the earlier books the reader knows how this will end, I don't understand, but she does it for sure. Really gripping. Also, this is set round the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, a place I went to regularly as a child, with other locations I know well, which for me adds to the pleasure of the read.

Very strange reading the prequel when you sort of know what happened already.

In many was this was a typical DCI Ryan page-turner, which was as enjoyable as ever. However there were times I didn’t want to continue reading because I knew what the final outcome would be.

Will be moving on to Tanamo very soon

This book is a prequel where we get to learn how Ryan's sister met her horrific end in detail and the effect it had on Ryan thus building his character and giving the reader an insight into why he does what he does in the other books in the series. Knowing what was to come didn't really bother me.

I had forgot this was the prequel until I started reading it and found old characters in the narrative. Then I remembered someone had told me it was a bit weird, however I soon realised they meant it was weird reading about the past in the middle of a series, rather than the story itself was weird. Knowing what was to come wasn’t an issue but it did make you want to read quicker, but at the same time, not. I did wonder if this had been the first book in the series, not accepted by the publisher, but not according to the author’s note at the end. It is worth reading to understand the depths of Ryan’s suffering when we first met him on Lindisfarne. We knew the bare facts about The Hacker; but these gruesome descriptions of his crimes emphasise just how devious and twisted an adversary Ryan was up against. It was also interesting to get an insight into the early days of the team working together.

Given to me by earthcaroleanne at the pre convention excursion in Falkirk. Just finished Longstone on the train home from there. Also started another book so this will be put to the top of tbr 🙂
