Frank McCourt hit the big time with "Angela's Ashes" and if you are or haven (ever) been a teacher you will probably like this book more. Actually, two Irish people I known told me they couldn't stand "Angela's Ashes" as it would make everyone think that's how all Irish children grew up. NOT SO. Dickens wrote about the miserable childhood of Oliver Twist, but I never jumped to the conclusion that Engish children grew up in cold brick buildings with even colder, meaner caregivers.
