This is the first book in the 'Wire in the Blood' series and unusually for me, I saw the TV drama before I read the book. However, I’m please to say Robson Green, as the criminal profiler Tony Hill, seems to fit the physical description in the book, unlike some TV detectives.

This book is not for the faint hearted as Val McDermid weaves a gruesome tale. The killer is obsessed with medieval torture instruments which means that none of the victims died easily and there are no punches pulled. One of the things that makes this book original is the fact that the reader is allowed into the mind of the killer. At the beginning of every chapter, we are shown a few pages from the killer's journal. These can be disturbing, but they are an interesting device and very well written, and they give the book that little bit of edge.

A serial killer is at work in the northern town of Bradfield, dumping the bodies in areas frequented by the thriving local gay community. Dubbed the 'Queer Killer' by the press, he tortures the victims horribly.  DI Carol Jordan is on the team searching for the killer. Struggling with sexism in the force, with a boss who has no respect for gay men, she teams up with psychological profiler Tony Hill who is trying to convince the police that his work is worthwhile. Tony also has a little secret of his own. I found the torture scenes distressing to read, but this is gripping and well written.

Good fun to read. A bit dated but who can resist a thriller?
