Geneticist Professor Don Tillman is very intelligent but has no social skills, has never had a second date and is in search of a wife. He devises a 16-page questionnaire for suitable candidates (which is reproduced at the back of the book, if you are curious).
Things start to change for him, uncomfortably, when he meets red-haired barmaid Rosie, the most unsuitable of all, and does what he can to help her find her real father through clandestine DNA testing.
A good understanding of Asperger's syndrome without ever mentioning that Don might be on the spectrum.
It finished a little abruptly because there were still quite a few pages to go, but these are the questionnaire, interviews with the author, introduction to the follow-up and some cocktail recipes.
Some of the situations Don puts himself into did make me laugh out loud. It is a funny and sympathetic book, well-written and vivid.
This is the first in a trilogy (the Rosie Effect and the Rosie Result).
