I got this book at a local thrift shop, for another release copy. It's subtitled "Image and Reality in the Lives of Women in Northern New England, 1650-1750".

Very interesting history/biography about daily life and societal issues in colonial New England. There are a LOT of quotes from old letters, journals, and other papers, many of them surprisingly detailed and personal, and revealing things that never got into the textbooks {wry grin}. Overall the book's a bit dry, but there are so many delightful [and, sometimes, appalling] peeks into the goings-on of three hundred years ago that it's worth coping with the sometimes-repetitive framework. [Among the little gems: a letter from a son to his mother, complaining about the state of his clothes and asking her to wash the socks he's sending home; sounds just like a modern-day college student, except that nowadays it'd probably be email instead of quill and paper!]

I plan to leave this book on a bench somewhere near the Commonwealth Museum on Morrissey Blvd, while on my way to a tour of the documents there. Hope someone enjoys the book!
