It is a mixture of serious and amusing in its plot and characters.

The Indian community in Southall is close, but it is also oppressive. The main conflict has to do with arranged marriages and the way women are discounted in the culture.

Nikki rejects that culture, but her lack of prospects pushes her to take a part-time job teaching Indian women in London to write. Her family relationships are also on the rocky side, and she disapproves of her elder sister, who wants to have an arranged marriage herself, or she will do it on her own.

The manager of this programme / activity seems hard to please, very conservative, especially because it is going to take place in the temple, and keeping up appearances is essential.

However, the first day doesn't go as Nikki had planned. The women, all of them widows, want to tell their own stories, and are no interested at all at learning how to write English.
