Yellow Wolf was one of the few surviving participants of the Nez Perce War when he decided to narrate the Indian strategy and policy in the conflict to his friend, scribe, and commentator, Lucullus Virgil McWhorter who was born in 1860 in a log cabin on the upper waters of the Monongahela River in what is now West Virginia. He moved in 1897 to historic Fort Jefferson, Ohio. In 1903, he settled in Yakima Valley, Washington. When the author died in 1944, he had been working on a field history of the Nez Perce War. In 1952, this volume was first published. The author's son prepared it for publication.
