#7 in the Inspector Montalbano Mystery series, set in Sicily.
Increasingly disillusioned with his government and the world in general, Inspector Montalbano is considering retirement. He is starting to feel his age, and even his favourite restaurant has closed. But when he bumps into a dead body during a bracing swim, his detective instincts are aroused once more. Particularly, when the most likely identity of the victim is a man already long buried . . .

A reasonably enjoyable entry in the series if you are not looking for a serious detective novel and accept that these are written to be humorous and somewhat quirky and off the wall. This offering veers more into the realms of dark humour, with a dose of the nasty thrown in. Montalbano is a very odd fellow in many ways, and some of his actions are pretty inexcusable / unbelievable in context, but hey, he is what he is, and it’s his character that makes the series. So just go with it . . .

Sorry about the delay.
Sorry about the delay.
As usual after the long Easter weekend a bundle of mail turns up on our doorstep and this year it included (joy!) a book parcel that travelled all across the country. I always enjoy Montalbano novels and haven't read this one. Thanks for sharing!
A quick read and it's always a joy to get reunited with not only Montalbano but all the colorful characters around him (including, of course, Sicily). This instalment deals with the very serious topic of illegal boat immigration across the Mediterranean and has some fairly sad moments but also falls flat in others. The ending seems especially rushed in some sort of Bond-esque development that didn't really work for me. Still a rollicking ride and I can't wait to read the next Montalbano novel that comes my way!
To be released at the Melbourne CBD meetup this month.
Picked up at the recent Melbourne meetup. Wasn't sure if I had read the book, but have since discovered that I did read it and see the TV version to boot, so I'm planning to take to my parents who are avid readers.
