This book was pretty informative, but mostly just helpful. 35% of the book is anecdotes from Dr. David Elkind's experiences. 45%-55% of the book is practical advice. This only leaves 10% to 20% facts and new information. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Elkind's advice is soothing and practical. However it is advice. No advice is completely useful to all people and all situations. Dr. Elkind's advice seems to come from his sessions and experiences with teenagers and their parents. He even draws on life experiences and memories of his own. All of this is very good and genuine. Dr. Elkind has a sincere passion for his work and what he writes about.

I am critical of advice in books like this though. Too many times, I think books have been taken too seriously by Do-It-Yourselfers who have good intent, but little skill in employing such advice. I think many of the people who seek the material in this book are at their wits end already and are needing much more than just good advice.

On the upside, Dr. Elkind provides an extensive bibliography (more advice books?!) and plenty of helpful resources including 1-800 numbers and Counseling and Rehabilitation Agencies. These are resources parents dont use enough in my opinion.

Another positive thing about Elkind's book is that it does shift the point of view from controlling parent to adult partner in the growing process. I love that approach to parenting. It is important that kids find allies not superiors at home. When this happens they can succeed in becoming independent and strong members of society.
