A wonderful book about some eccentric Icelandic museums, a huge number of which have sprung up in recent times. The Phallological Museum was started as a joke when friends and colleagues kept giving animal penises to the founder (with them saying they would be on the committee as 'Upright Members in Good Standing'), the Museum of Sea Monsters doesn't have a physical collection at all and was started to keep the town alive, the Herring Era Museum remembers an industry that was lost when the fish stopped coming, the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft tells more than it intends about the history of extreme poverty in the country, and contains amongst other things a reproduction pair of necropants. And we must not forget the museum of whales which cannot be found at all (I have a suspicion that the other museum of whales mentioned as not worth going to may be the one I have been to - but we enjoyed it!) Whimsical, sometimes funny, compassionate, this book is well worth a read.
