The famous instruction "turn the other cheek" is awfully hard for me to follow. I'm an instinctive fighter.

From the Book of Matthew:

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Book 5: Verses 38-42

I have decided to release this book in BookCrossing to honor a friend. With all good wishes!

This book is part of the lovingly printed "Pocket Canon" editions of the books of the King James Bible, translated between 1603 and 1611. Then England was just two generations away from being a Catholic country and the fairly new printing press brought books, formerly only owned by the very rich, the Church, Universities and other vaunted institutions of the day, to more and more people. I didn't stumble upon these little books until about 2004. They were printed in the 1990s. I've found so many of the essays within these small editions just wonderful. I have a practice of reading the Biblical texts, letting them speak, and then reading the essays. Grove Press comissioned prominent secular writers or other contemporary figures to review the books of the King James Canon. The Pocket Canons, though not technically in print anymore, are still about. Readers can find them online. Sadly the Grove Press is no more--but Canongate Books, a descendant, published all of the Pocket Canon essays in Revelations--Personal Responses to the Books of the Bible, released in 2007.
