The true story of a young man who travelled from Lancahsire to London in the 1930s, hoping for good job prospects there, but finding that London was not what he expected.
I didn't enjoy this book. Okay, I actually didn't finish it, so I can't give a fair verdict. I found it depressing and dull, although I believe it is supposed to be a good book and was the Radio 4 Book of the Week at one time - but it's just not the kind of book I enjoy.

Book given to me by my mother who found it on a park bench - not the sort of book I would normally read, but I really enjoyed it - it was quite moving. Thought the middle bit got a bit bogged down in 1930's UK politics but soon picked up pace again. Finished reading it in Chatel in the French Alps, and have passed it on to my host who is English but lives out here. Wonder where it will turn up next!

I really enjoyed it. Excellently written, fine painting of characters, gathering pace nicely!
I shall leave it at Geneva Airport departures.
