The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith - very good
I'm not sure what I expected from this. I knew it was JK Rowling writing under a
pseudonym, I knew that her story telling is excellent (despite never reading any of her children's books) and I knew her first adult book was panned by the critics: I presume that is why she wrote this one as Robert Galbraith - to get a fair review.
Cormoran Strike is ex-army, disabled out after losing a leg. He's set himself up as a Private Investigator. Typical of the genre, his personal life is disintegrating around him. Robin is newly moved to London to get married and turns up as his latest temp. On her first day, a new case comes in via the brother of an old friend of Strike's: his sister, a famous model, has committed suicide but the family don't believe it. So from there, the story arc is standard for the genre, lots of twists and turns until the mystery is solved, but it wasn't predictable and it was a page turner (what did we decide the kindle equivalent was?)
I really enjoyed it. Good, fast paced story. Well drawn, believable characters, ok
some of them were very like various celebs, but that didn't detract. A quick and enjoyable read to start the New Year.
It was listed on Amazon as the first of the Cormoran Strike novels so I do hope that there will be more - I shall certainly read them!
