Nearly 25 years after Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson returns with an intimate tale of three generations, from the Civil War to the 20th century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. In the words of Kirkus, it is a novel "as big as a nation, as quiet as thought, and moving as prayer. Matchless and towering." GILEAD tells the story of America and will break your heart.

I'm afraid this is another modern classic that absolutely didn't work for me. I know so many people who think it's fabulous but it totally eluded me. This brand new copy has landed in my lap but will pass it on as I really can't be bothered trying a second reading to find out if it would change my mind!

Wound up with this one at the end of meetup. I'm with Jean-Sol on this one - wasn't a fan when I read it. Will help it continue its travels though - in hopes it finds a more appreciative reader!
