Verhalen (echt of verzonnen?) over het leven van een Amsterdammer die regelmatig op de televisie te zien was. Met af en toe een rol voor zijn hond, Ben.

The Netherlands has a tradition of writers, journalists, comedians and - more recently - celebrities who write a weekly or even daily column in a national newspaper. Even local newspapers have columns written by local journalists or someone who has opinions on local news, language, student life or some other pet subject. I’m not sure if it’s particularly Dutch, but I don’t think the same thing happens in British publications. Some of these columnists become so much a part of Dutch daily life that their columns are collected into books, either as selections or all of them, as an annual event. In the past, this certainly happened with Simon Carmiggelt’s columns and the comedian Youp van ‘t Hek is also a repeat offender. They’re often strange reading, years later, as they tend to refer obliquely to current events, trends or personalities I have never heard of.

Jan Lenferink was the presenter of the first Dutch talkshow, RUR, from 1983 to about 2007, so he was already a well-known personality who was well-known in cafes in Amsterdam which were much-frequented by so-called BNers (Bekende Nederlanders - Dutch celebrities). When he heard that the newspaper De Volkskrant was bringing out a weekly supplement, he submitted some articles to be considered as their new columnist, only to be told that the job had already been given to Martin Bril, an established columnist. Undaunted, Lenferink wrote more of his pieces to be published in this book. As he points out in one of his not-before-published pieces, the public are paying twice for the real columnists’ stories, if they are buying a book of them they already read in the paper, so Lenferink’s book is a bargain. I’m guessing it wasn’t that successful as I’m the only person reviewing it on Goodreads, although that’s not uncommon with older Dutch popular books that aren’t on school reading lists. This one is not one of the best examples of its type. The author is a name-dropper, can be snide about people, but there are a few amusing pieces. The ones purporting to be the thoughts of his dog Ben are the best. The play on words in the title is also amusing. ‘Ben in de stad’ is the sort of thing you’d leave as a note: ‘I’m in town’, but here it implies it’s about the dog Ben, who enjoys walking around the city with his owner. That’s as good as it gets, though I did enjoy the description of the 1990s ‘Merry widows’. I should know better by now than to read these things hoping for more.
