I got this slim softcover from a local thrift shop, for another release copy.

I "discovered" the charming plasticine bas-relief illustrations of Barbara Reid thanks to a copy of Have You Seen Birds . Since then I've acquired several more of her books, including this delightful tale of a mouse who lives in the New York City subway tunnels. [I'd seen quite a few mice skittering along the tracks in various subways (not just New York's!), and wondered how they managed.] While this story presents a somewhat anthropomorphized view of the mice it also depicts the territorial battles and other risks - but overall it's a basic "quest" tale, in which our hero, Nib, seeks a way out of the tunnels and to the mythical land of "Tunnel's End".

The illustrations include images of the mice on the rails gathering up the bits of litter and snack food dropped by the commuters above [the commuters are shown from the ankles down only, as the mice can't see farther up than that {grin}]. They're done in Reid's trademark style of painting-with-clay in marvelous detail, and here they also include some found objects such as popsicle sticks, ticket stubs, and other subway debris. As always, look for the tiny details - insects on leaves, eyes peeking out from corners, etc. Charming book!
