A travelogue of the author’s 1978 trip by rail from Boston to Esquel, Argentina, which was as far south as he could travel by train. The journey took him through the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina and introduced him to some characters along the way. This was pretty dense material with a lot of description. The high points were Costa Rica and Buenos Aires, where he became acquainted with the author Jorge Luis Borges, who was aged 80 at the time.
