In 1929, 18-year-old Clara is committed to the Willard Asylum for the Chronic Insane by her rich father because she refuses to enter into an arranged marriage and instead insists that she wants to marry her boyfriend, a poor Italian immigrant.
In 1995, hundreds of suitcases are discovered in the attic of Willard Asylum. Inmates brought the suitcases with them when they arrived at the institution. 17-year-old Isabelle works with her foster mother on a museum project to catalogue the items contained in the suitcases in an attempt to reconstruct the patients’ lives and becomes particularly interested in Clara’s story.
