I went in with lowered expectations, for sure. But enough pals have enjoyed later books, that I finally wanted to dive into this. I'd considered just reading a summary and starting with book 2, but my inner completist couldn't do that. But because I was expecting it to be trope-heavy and frustrating at times, I ended up being just fine with it, and sometimes pleasantly surprised. The writing and descriptive world-building was more interested than I'd expected. And with lowered expectations, I only rolled my eyes and kept turning the pages at the broad strokes/generalized characters and at the constant plot/tension being provided by our heroine being obstinate or upset for not good reasons. Just make it make sense for their own internal logic, is all I'm asking. Not just having someone be instransigent for plot reasons/conflict and not because it makes sense for the character. And I did find the final third intriguing. I hadn't done any research on the plot or story line of this series. Things got dark and grim, with heavy stakes. All the time and trials Under the Mountain were an interesting turn. But if I didn't have pals telling me to keep reading, I'd just have stopped after this book.
