Illustrations by Maurice Sendak! what a find ^__^

Although it's declared a children's book, it's not child-oriented, especially the complicated language with its use of sophisticated words. It was published 1864, when there existed no special books for children, just fairy tales or nonsense stories like Alice in Wonderland. Maybe it was aimed at young adults, since it contains also a love story, and the young man is ready to drown for his princess. Quite macabre: his body should serve as a plug to prevent the lake water from draining down. Dark and sugary at the same time.
Two extra points for the illustrations :)
