Picked this book up from the beautiful Walkmill campsite where we stayed for a few days before Easter. I remember being read this book in assemby at primary school when I was 10 or 11 years old. We would sit there, in the large hall with shine parquet floor, crossed legged, listening attentively as the headmistress read another chapter of this book. It's quite a traumatising story and luckily for me, many of the experiences of the young character Willie Beech when over my head. I read the book again as an adult and still found it just so harrowing at times. Poor Willie Beech. A truly beautiful story. There was a TV adaptation I seem to recall (maybe 1990's?) that was also very good. Anyway, it's been atleast two decades since I last read this, so will do so before passing it on.
