BURBLE: ‘If it was me, if I was the murderer, Alice thought, where would I go? What would I do? The job he had set himself was unfinished, he must be aware that his luck could not go on forever. It was a simple calculation; at best, a lifetime in prison, at worst he could be killed by the police whilst attempting to complete his self appointed task.’

Introducing Alice Rice, Edinburgh detective. Smart and capable, but battling disillusionment and loneliness, she races against time and an implacable killer to solve a series of grisly murders among Edinburgh’s professional elite in the well-to-do New Town.

Praise from Alexander McCall Smith, author of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency:
"With this highly readable debut novel, Gillian Galbraith establishes what one hopes will be a long-running presence. This is a vivid and exciting story, set against the background of Edinburgh's legal and medical circles."

Happily, as this is the second copy of BLOOD IN THE WATER I have registered with BookCrossing I already have a REVIEW - WED 13 OCT 2010 - here's a copy of that.

This is the first book in the Alice Rice Mystery series (2007) I like the writing but find I am taking a while to really engage with Detective Sergeant Rice. There seems a strong procedural thrust for this both in its police and law aspects. The law setting and it’s very Scottishness, makes for intriguing reading so I am certainly enjoying all that mid-way.

Somehow, as I by no means tire of saying, an Edinburgh location for some drama, as I live in the city, never seems to fail to interest me. I am also keen to praise the smattering of well observed Scots dialogue. Which is spot on. The most distinct difference between this authors work and many other crime and mystery writers appears to the carefully detailed time we spend with the majority of the victims. We get to know them, before they are struck down. On reflection that aspect has really brought me to appreciate this novel, as an examination of the mechanisms of thought that can bring the extraordinary and utterly dreadful thought of killing another human into consideration and further, onto tragic action.

But even the extra details of the victims lives do not reveal all to us. So when we are finally entrusted to the murders point of view we can see not all is as it appeared. What's more, it reveals that the murderer has also been operating from a very skewed point of view. The consideration of which curiously engenders space for compassion about the torments that drove him to the desperate corner he painted himself into.
I think my appreciation of Detective Sergeant Alice Rice is going to be a slow burn one, and I am pleased to have the next in this series, Where the Shadows Fall, to follow up with.

Alice’s stalwart attempts to go out dating and find a new partner were a bittersweet wee counterpoint to her daily grind and I look forward to there being more on the theme of loneliness and relationships as the series progresses.
