Blurb: Flanders, 1625. After his tussles with the Inquisition and the intrigue of the Spanish Court, Captain has returned to the mud and desperation of the long war in Flanders.

The troops are weary and ill-nourished and the winter has been hard. As Spain sinks even further into depravity and corruption, the soldiers have not been paid and must survive by whatever means they can.

Meanwhile, the Captains trusted friend Quevedo's star is rising at court, and he keeps Alatrise apprised of the machinations of his arch-enemy, Luis de Alquezar. Then news comes of a Dutch plan to alleviate the siege of Breda once and for all...

Oh, good grief, what a compilation of over-detailed war-making procedings, and sweeping generalisations concerning a seige, (and much else besides,) in 1625 of the Dutch Town of Breda, by unpaid Spanish soldiers. Much sprinkling in of other issues, intrigues at the Spanish court, mutinies by starving soldiers, grievous cruelties on all sides, special mention to the Spanish commanders dealing with exacting disipline on their own mutineering troops.

Plus, while enduring the endless grind and soul-sucking monotonony of seige warfare, plentiful jocular reflections on glories of past martial engagements. All very poetic...

Why did I read as much of this as I did? Waiting for; "grandly entertaining" to become apparent or perhaps the sense of it to make itself clear? Though, I might have found that in the epilogue, which I jumped to and rocketed through. It was admittedly poignant. Of the main body of the novel, I have to say I called my involvement to a halt before chapter 5 could devour more hours of reading time that would be impossible to retrieve.

Clearly not in the mood for this! Expect someone somewhere might be so this is going travelling in search of new readers.
